=====================================================================
FreeSCAN is a freeware program for programming the Uniden BC246T,
SC230, BC330T, BCD396T, BCD996T UBC3500XLT, BC346XT, BCD396XT, BCD996XT,
BC15XT, and BC15T scanners.
This version covers about 95% of the scanner's capabilities. If you find bugs
log onto
http://scannow.org and report them as well as check for an updated version.
Usage Notes
================================
Each scanner has unique capabilities and quirks. As such, there may be options
in the program
which are not applicable to your scanner.
500, 250 & 200 TGID Limit
- The 996T & 15 scanners have a TGID Limit of 250 TGIDs per trunk system.
Be sure to respect this.
-The 246/330/396T scanner have a 200 TGID limit.
-Exceeding these limits will cause excess TGIDs to not be uploaded to the
scanner.
Multi-Site Vs Single Site
- FreeSCAN supports the 996/15 feature of having
multiple trunk sites in one system
- This isn't supported in the 246/330/396. If you attempt to upload a
multi-site system to a single-site
only scanner, FreeSCAN will split the sites up into
individual systems, duplicating TGID groups, and you may run out of memory.
Digital Systems And Analog Scanner
- FreeSCAN will not allow you to upload a fully
digital MP25 system to an analog scanner since
these scanners have no chance of being able to track these systems.
Tips For Reliable Download
When you bring up the download window, it will preserve the system names of
previous detected systems. If you have made any changes
whatsoever to your scanner's programming since last bringing up this list, you
should reclick on Queue System List before downloading.
This is because the system index IDs will shift around inside the scanner's
memory when you make changes, and if FreeSCAN doesn't
get
an updates list then it will not be able to download the systems.
COM Port Trouble?
If you are using a USB-Serial adaptor, get the latest drivers
for it. If your driver is made before 2008 it is too old and will lead to
errors during upload and download. It is also recommended. It is also recommend
that you open up your COM port settings in Device Manager, click on the
Advanced button, and lower the UART threshold. Lower thresholds will improve
communications reliability.
Control & Logging
Still not complete, but it will get better in future versions.
Minimum System Requirements:
----------------------------
- Windows XP SP2/Vista or higher. Microsoft .net version 2.0
- Pentium 800Mhz or higher
- 512Mb RAM
- 6MB hard drive space
- Colour video card with 1024x768
SC230 Users
----------------------------
-"Race" systems are unsupported, they are treated as conventional
systems. Sorry but you have a cheap obsolete
Scanner that is barely worth supporting.
Version History
------------------
.9N
-A new enhancement has been added to the RadioReference
Web Import Service. As we all know,
these scanners have a limit of 20 groups per system. This can be an issue when
importing certain
systems because they contain many subcategories that only have 1 frequency in
the entire group
and some would consider entirely wasting space.
-A new feature has been added that lets you select the minimum number of
channel that should
appear in their own group. For example, if you set it to 3, any group with less
then 4 frequencies
will still be imported but its channels will all be placed in a Miscellaneous
group.
-This is great for rural areas where you get these behemoth systems that have
30, 40, or 50 groups
with only one or two frequencies per group compressed down to one system with a
Misc group that
contains all the respective frequencies.
Larger sized subcategories will continue to be imported as their own groups.
-To activate this feature, click on the Options tab in the RadioReference
Conventional Import dialog.
Logging System Enhancements:
----------------------------
*A new tab has been added to the Log Viewer called "Search".
You can use this to quickly query only log entries involving a specific item,
such as a specific
channel or a specific frequency. You can also use the search feature by
double-clicking on the
specific channel in the "Review" tab and all instances of that
channel becoming active will
automatically by searched and displayed.
*You can save and load log files from the Log Viewer. This makes it easy to
look up certain
days esp when used in conjunction with the search
feature. You can reload saved log files either
from the Log Viewer after starting virtual control, or you can load them up
directly from
the System Editor by selecting File * Open.
*Another new feature is Log Auto Save. If you have FreeSCAN
logging/recording 24/7, Log Autosave
will automatically save the log file at midnight local time and start a brand
new file.
Files are saved either to the My Documents folder or the last folder used to
save log files.
The file name is autogenerated for you.
These new logging features are designed to work in conjunction with the
built-in audio recording function.
Together, you can load up a log file and instantly look up any channel
activity, that happened at any time
recording & logging was active with very little effort.

More Notes About Audio Recording
=========================
Before you can use this feature, you must set it up and tell FreeSCAN which sound card device to use.
If you make any changes in that dialog box, you need to click Apply for them to
take effect.
The linear log will show the recorded file name. However in some cases this
will be blank. When there are two
transmissions in quick succession, they can be optionally combined into one MP3
file to keep the number of files
built up to a minimum. As a result, this line would be blank.
.9J
-Control channel mode is now forced off, but you can disable
this in preferences
-Geocoding was apparently causing some issues on XP
systems, should work better in this release
-Some minor beautification done to VC

CAUTION ** DANGER WILL ROBINSON ** CAUTION **
-Before you wipe out your programming experimenting with System Protect, read
the following:
Once System Protect is enabled and the system is uploaded to the scanner,
System Protect cannot be turned off.
Protect will lock down the affected system to both the user and FreeSCAN.
This means that the user going through the front panel cannot delete or modify
a protected system other then locking out channels. If you try to access it
through the programming menu,
the scanner will deny access.
Protected systems can't be downloaded back to software. It's a one way trip
only.
If you try to download a protected system, all the scanner will send are blank
channels.
You can still delete a protected system using FreeSCAN
as you would a normal system. But it
cannot be deleted through the front panel.

The New Site Combiner
---------------------
This is a new feature that has just been added. Although it is very simple to
use, explaining it is a bit more involved.
Systems on RR are often split into multiple sites. However, on Motorola
systems, the only thing that matters to the scanner is getting the critical
control channel frequency. As such, there is really no need to download all the
extra voice frequencies in addition to the multiple sites that accompany them.
This is even more true with scanners such as the 396T, which only have one site
per system and would thus need multiple systems to handle just one system.
This new feature is designed to solve this classic problem. When you select a
trunked Motorola system from RR's web import, FreeSCAN
will automatically add its own site called "*Combined CC". This site
will consists of only the control channels for all the other sites listed. You
can then safely deselect all the other sites, and select the *Combined CC site
exclusively to download.
An example of this is the Bell Fleetnet system, which
is 4 regions split into dozens of sites per region/system. Attempting to
download this conventionally and controlling it while underway would mean a
great deal of button pushing, and/or with non multi-site scanners, a lot of
scrolling and memory waste when you are traveling through the region and need
to constantly change systems/sites. With the new *Combined CC site, you
download the one single site, and can cover the entire region with just one
button push.
If you can receive multiple CCs and each one carries different traffic, you
cannot use this feature and hear all the traffic. In this case, you'll need to
retain separate systems or sites.

More Stuff About The New Scanners:
The new 396XT handles digital systems different. Where as
the 396T and 996T with 3.0 firmware allow you to create a dedicated P25 site,
the 396XT handles this as a unique system ("P25 Trunk"). As a result,
you may need to adjust your system types before uploading to respective
scanners.
FreeSCAN won't attempt to upload a system type to a
scanner that doesn't support it.
In addition, not all of the new features are supported yet, however many
settings like channel colour will still get
downloaded and preserved for upload,
just can't be edited at this time.

Custom" along with the rebanding parameters.
-Back by popular demand and new firmware, P25 threshold adjustments
-You can now tweak the AGC settings by going to Scanner * Setup Scanner Options
* Advanced
-FreeSCAN makes the digital dynamic range parameter
available to adjust, however this is not fully supported by firmware yet, so
the scanner will always reset it to 0.
-P25 Wait Time can now be tweaked (same place as the AGC)
-Digital End Code is now supported
-The new "Jump To" feature is now available in the LCARS interface
and the "Windows" interface
-LCARS interface enhancements

0.7
----------
-New: Automatic Scanner Optimizer.
This new feature analyses your scanner's programming, pointing out anything
that may be making it scan less efficiently then it could. These things include
duplicate frequencies, unsorted frequencies, long hold times, and other
settings that are often overlooked but can degrade scanner performance. You can
then have it automatically correct everything by clicking on a button.
-New: Recently Used File List
-New: You can now turn off channel deletion warnings
-Improved: The channel editor has been reworked to provide grid style editing,
similar to Excel
-Improved: Revised dialog for creating new systems
-Improved: EZ-Grab for conventional systems has been enhanced with improved algorithems. It has also been expanded to 9 columns to
handle the newer systems on RR.
-Improved: Automatic updater will now directly download the needed file for
you, rather then clicking through the website
-Improved: RR Trunk Import screen now shows how many TGIDs have also not being
selected for import
-Improved: Better file saving functionality
-Changed: Virtual Control Mode now uses the 2.x firmware RSSI indicator to give
a more precise indication of signal strength.
-This scale is more accurate then the old way,
however only extremely strong signals will pin the
signal strength indicater. It may not correlate with
the indicator on the front panel.
-Bug Fix: modulation mode on conventional channels tricky to set
-Bug Fix: channels would get improperly copied to the clipboard depending on
how they were selected.
-Bug Fix: Automatic frequency filler not setting audio type
-Bug Fix: Improper automatic naming of systems imported from RR
-Bug Fix: ID Search/Scan switched around when printing (Thanks Mike)
-Bug Fix: Virtual Control mode now automatically resets communications if there
is a buffer overflow.
-Misc. improvements and bugfixes
-I didn't have enough time to work on Virtual Control, so its
the same as in older versions, however there are a number of improvements
coming in future versions, so sit tight!
More on the Automatic Scanner Optimizer:
* It will report how well your frequencies are sorted, since sorted frequencies
scan faster. Its reported as a number between 0-100%, with 0-50% meaning your
frequencies are basically unsorted. After clicking on Auto Sort, this figure
will jump to 100%. If you then upload to your scanner, then redownload,
it may drop slightly below 100% because of the way systems are sorted. This is
normal and won't affect performance.

selected. Rather it leaves the name blank,
the scanner will automatically display the frequency when scanning.
More About TGID Expansion:
To use this new feature, simply load up the system in FreeSCAN
that contains the TGIDs and scan away.
When the scanner gets a TGID hit, FreeSCAN will look
it up in memory and display the associated TGID name.
If it is not working, check he following:
-Scanner is in ID SEARCH mode, not ID SCAN
-The system name (not the site name) in FreeSCAN must
match the system name in the scanner. I stress, not the site name.
-With certain systems, the scanner will mangle TGIDs when they are uploaded. As
a result, what FreeSCAN has in memory and what the
scanner has in memory won't match. To fix this, once you have uploaded redownload the system and save it.
